THE PAPER SCISSORS

Sydney's The Paper Scissors are starting to slice their way through the Australian music scene with their tropical tunes, and have recently teamed up with Bluejuice for the 'Less Talk More Problems' tour. Frontman Jai Pyne took a break from the tour to talk to Tsunami.

Your debut album was mixed in Oasis Studio in Tallebudgera - what made you choose a studio so far from home? We like to get away as much as possible and get out of our comfort zone, I think you hear things differently when you are away from home.

Whose idea was it to use ukulele, banjo and whistles on 'The Bandit' B-side? I thought it would be a good idea. I like it when you hear a band or artist reinterpreting their songs. It shows a different aspect when you can hear a song in a new light.   I played ukulele and sang, Tom played banjo and whistles, Xav whistled, and Ivan played snare.

'We Don't Walk' has appeared on the new hit TV series 'Underbelly'. How did you line that up, and did you know the show would be so successful? We work with a company that licenses to film and TV and they lined it up. It has had a really good response. The song is on the soundtrack with Nick Cave, among some other great Australian acts, so that is pretty amazing.

Why did Bryce leave the band, and has Ivan blended in easily? What does he add to the band dynamic/sound? Ah, hmm, you ask the tough questions. Bryce left because of personal reasons. He has a full-time business and a partner as well, so he has a lot on his plate. Ivan is amazing, he fits in so well. He is a really relaxed guy and his drumming is phenomenal. The sound has changed a little bit. Bryce was quite mathematical, whereas Ivan is a little looser and insane, with a bit more flair. We are playing some new tunes in the set now and we are really happy with how it's all working.

Are you planning to record new material anytime soon, or will you be busy touring for a while? No concrete plans to record yet, but we're going to start demoing later in the year and maybe recording after that. Not sure yet. I want to lock in a time and start thinking about logistics soon, but we still have lots of songs to write before we start thinking about that stuff.

How did this tour with Bluejuice come about? Those guys are pretty rowdy - are you prepared for some crazy times on the road? I met Jake [Stone - vocals] a few years ago and we would just always chat about music. Then we started talking about doing shows together. Our sounds are quite different but I think both of our bands share a certain attitude, so it seemed natural that we tour together. We have done two shows on the tour so far and I slept 'til 4pm the day after the second one. They are pretty mental those BJ boys, but great fun.

May 31 at the Step Inn, Brisbane and June 1 at The Great Northern Hotel, Byron Bay.
